Review a Translation for Changed Commitments, Numbers and Uncertainty

Review a fictional English and French notice by tracing quantities, deadlines, plans and conditions, then distinguish correction from adaptation.

Compare Meaning Before Polishing Fluency

A translation can read naturally while changing the facts. Review consequential units of meaning against the exact source version: actor, action, quantity, unit, date, scope, obligation and uncertainty. Read the complete message again after repairs so a local correction does not leave a contradictory headline or summary.

The TWB humanitarian interpreting guide, PDF pages 7-10, emphasizes accurate communication and clarification within competence. The method and bilingual packet below are original teaching material with documented desk-review limits. They do not certify a language pair, provide a legal translation or verify a real notice.

Freeze the Fictional Source and Candidate

English source S1: "The team plans to deliver 12 cartons by 10 November 2026, if road access permits. This is not a confirmed delivery."

French candidate T1, deliberately wrong: "L'équipe livrera 24 cartons le 12 novembre 2026. La livraison est confirmée."

T1 says the team will deliver twenty-four cartons on November 12 and that the delivery is confirmed. Its grammatical fluency does not preserve S1.

UnitS1 MeaningT1 ChangeRequired Treatment
CommitmentPlans to deliverlivrera asserts future deliveryRestore the plan; do not invent a confirmed commitment
Quantity12 cartons24 cartonsCorrect to twelve; verify the unit separately
DateBy November 10, 2026On November 12, 2026Restore both the date and latest-date meaning
ConditionIf road access permitsOmittedRestore the condition

Each finding is an error relative to supplied S1. No actual operational evidence supports changing S1.

Repair the Complete Notice

Corrected teaching version T2: "L'équipe prévoit de livrer 12 cartons au plus tard le 10 novembre 2026, si l'accès routier le permet. Cette livraison n'est pas confirmée."

Prévoit de livrer preserves the plan. Au plus tard le means no later than the stated date. Si introduces the condition. N'est pas confirmée says the delivery is not confirmed. Twelve, cartons and the year remain intact. Review accent marks, punctuation, referents and the intended audience's usage as well as these semantic checks. Other faithful phrasings are possible.

The English explanation of the French helps readers inspect the example; it is not an independent back-translation certificate. A second competent reviewer should compare S1 and T2 directly. Real specialist or binding texts require appropriate professional and context-specific review.

Distinguish an Error From a Changed Context

Suppose the operations owner later supplies an authorized source revision S2 with November 12 as the planned latest date. T1's date might then resemble S2, but T1 still changes quantity, commitment, condition and confirmation. A changed date does not cure the rest of the message. Review against S2 explicitly and retain the version relationship.

If local recipients need a different service arrangement, obtain the actual operational decision, revise the source and label the adaptation. A translator should not quietly change a date to make a notice seem locally workable. Translation conveys a message; it cannot establish that road access or delivery capacity exists.

Hand Off the Review Precisely

The fictional review record identifies S1, T1, the five meaning changes, T2 and the unresolved audience/context checks. It reports correction of the supplied teaching errors, not field validation or a real delivery approval. The source owner retains responsibility for facts and commitments; language and technical reviewers retain their distinct checks.
